Organ donation is the donation of an organ from a dead person to a living recipient. The generosity of donors and their families enables over 1,00,000 people in INDIA every year to get a new lease of life.

1. Our second edition of Ramanagara Marathon is also dedicated to create awareness on Organ Donation and we are proud to be associated with Mohan Foundation, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization started to promote organ donation in 1997 in Chennai.
2. MOHAN Foundation started by philanthropists and medical professionals led by Dr.Sunil Shroff, is striving hard to provide every Indian who is suffering from end stage organ failure with the 'gift of life' through organ donation.
3. It is estimated that around 200,000 kidneys, 50,000 livers and 50,000 hearts are needed every year in India and only about 2-3% get it.
4. Once a patient is declared brain dead, 37 organs and tissues can be harvested, including eyes (cornea), heart, kidneys, liver, lungs and pancreas.
5. One organ donor can save up to eight lives. The same donor can also save or improve the lives of up to 50 people by donating tissues and eyes.
6. Donation only occurs after the death of a patient and the success rate for organ transplants is between 80 and 90 percent.
7. Anyone can be a potential donor regardless of age, race, or medical history.
8. All major religions in the India support organ, eye and tissue donation and see it as the final act of love and generosity toward others.
9. There is no cost to the donor or their family for organ or tissue donation.

Vultures play a vital role in the ecosystem, cleaning the environment of rotting carcasses – nature’s very own waste disposal mechanism. Since the early 1990s, populations of the Oriental White-backed, Long-billed and Slender-billed Vultures, have declined by 97% and all three species face the imminent threat of extinction.

The shocking decline is attributed to diclofenac, a generic veterinary drug used as painkillers to treat cattle. Vultures that feed on drug-contaminated cow carcasses left out, suffers rapid kidney failure and death. The drug was banned for veterinary use in India, Nepal and Pakistan in 2006, but it continues to be sold and used illegally today.

The scrub patch around Ramadevara Betta at Ramanagara along the Mysore Road, which houses the critically-endangered Long-billed vulture, has been declared by Karnataka government as Ramadevarabetta Vulture Sanctuary (RVS) in an effort to protect and save the long billed vultures and their natural habitats from complete extinction.

It is the only Vulture Sanctuary in whole of South India. It is with increased awareness and effort that we need to protect these last surviving 40 odd birds in the wild from Extinction.

         Cadaver organ donation is after death, in natural death eyes and other tissues can be donated. Solid organs can only be donated in Brain death.

4. What is a Donor Card?
         The Donor card is way of expressing your wish to donate your organs(s).It is like making a will.

5. How to obtain Donor card?
         Donor cards are issued by many organizations; popular amongst those is MOHAN FOUNDATION.
         You can also register online through Mohan Foundation.
         We have collaborated with MOHAN FOUNDATION to issue donor card on the event day, you can pledge to be an Organ Donor by availing these cards. Alternately, MOHAN FOUNDATION donor cards can be obtained at Mohan Foundation.
